Dina F. Trevino

Dina Fernandez Treviño, 97, of Mission, Texas, passed away on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2013 at the Mission Hospital. Mrs. Dina Fernandez Treviño was born in Brownsville, Texas on October 18th, 1916. She lived most of her life in Mission. She was married to Samuel (Melo) Treviño , Jr., who has been deceased since 1977. Dina is survived by her four children: Samuel (Sam) J. Treviño, III of McAllen, Jose (Joe) Fernandez Treviño of Mission, Dina Linda (Treviño) Rodriguez of Spring Branch and David Aaron Treviño (64) of McAllen, 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. During WWII, she helped her husband at his business, Cash Feed & Seed. In 1950, Dina ventured on her own to open the BenSam Shop (44 years in business) and later added Dina’s Kiddie Shop. She was listed in her high school yearbook as the quietest girl in town. For many years, Dina participated in the Texas Citrus Fiesta Style Shows making citrus costumes and received many awards. She created many innovative ways to use citrus and vegetable products to decorate costumes. Mrs. Dina F. Treviño was presented several awards in her life time: Woman of the Year 1984, Outstanding Community Service Award, C. B. Curtis Award in 1986, Texas Citrus Fiesta Maureen Duncan Nickolaus Award, The Golden Citrus Award, The Good Neighbor of the Year Award twice, Shining Star Award, and the Pioneer Award. Dina served in the Mission Chamber Commerce Board and was the The International Director of International Good Neighbor Council. She was elected twice as President of the Zonta International Club of West Hidalgo. She was head of the Miss Pageant Committee in Mission, was a member of the local chapter AARP and active for ten years with the Mission Hospital Auxiliary. Her favorite hobbies were extreme sewing, gourmet cooking and world-wide traveling. Visitation will be today, Friday, December 27, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Virgil Wilson Mortuary Memorial Chapel in Mission, Texas. Funeral Service will be on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Mission. Interment will follow to Valley Memorial Gardens in Mission, Texas. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Virgil Wilson Mortuary of Mission, TX.
