March 24, 1920 - August 24, 2021
On August 24, 2021, Irma Sanchez Mears passed away peacefully in Channelview, TX surrounded by her family. She went to be with the Lord at the age of 101. She was born to the late Juan and Paulina Sanchez, March 24, 1920, in Mercedes, Texas. She was 1 of 12 children. A lifelong resident of McAllen, she was well-loved in her community where she served for many years as a member of Sacred Heart Church and later St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church and San Juan Diego Parish. Serving the Lord and others brought her great joy. She instilled in her family these values; but above all, she taught them to love and fear the Lord. We will forever treasure all the loving “bendiciones” blessings she gave us. Irma entered the workforce after being widowed at a young age. She worked as a seamstress, was an entrepreneur selling Mexican artesania at local markets, and made tamales to sell. Relentlessly, she played the role of father and mother in a time when that wasn’t common. Despite these struggles, she always provided for her family and taught them the importance of hard work, family, and values. She often said, “Los tiempos cambian, pero los valores no.” Although, she faced many challenges and hardships, she never lost her zest for life or her sense of humor. In her later years, she lovingly joked, “A Dios se le perdio mi passaporte. I sure hope He finds my passport.” Irma never remarried after the death of her husband Enrique, who preceded her in death by 62 years. Irma is also preceded in death by her son Enrique Mears, and her siblings: Juan Jr., Rufino, Elisa, Hortencia, Amalia, Virginia, and Eva Sanchez, Isabel Ponce de Leon, Susanna Cantu, Benilde Morette. She is survived by her youngest sister Nora Morales who’s 92 years old, her six children: Maria de la Luz Mears, Fernando Mears, Jesus and Yoli Mar Mears of Houston, TX; Veronica Mears and Chris Flores of Channelview, Tx; and Sofia Arms and Arturo Mears of McAllen, TX. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and several loving nieces and nephews. Viewing will be held Monday August 30, 2021 at 5:00pm - 9:00pm at The Lord and I Funeral Home in Peñitas, Tx followed by a rosary at 7:00pm. A Chapel Service will be held the following day at the same location at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen, Tx.
